Somebody better check the pulse on the Symbian OS, because apparently some folks think it’s dying….
For some reason Tech Crunch is hating on the Symbian OS, blaming it for many of the issues that have developed in Nokia’s quest to produce an iPhone killer worthy opponent. Could it be that the Nokia team is trying to force an OS onto the hardware instead of developing an ecosystem that will efficiently blend the hardware with the software? I can put hackintosh on my PC – but that won’t make it a Mac.
Tech crunch also reported the unholy union of Nokia and Microsoft yesterday in a review that expressed concern about the vitality of the Symbian OS. The article discusses how the inclusion of Microsoft office on the Symbian platform will not be able to resuscitate the geriatric Symbian OS. But wait – isn’t it the other way around? Including MS office suite on the 200 million Nokia phones is an admission from the wizards of Washington that the Windows Mobile OS is a B student in an honors class – sure, it’s pretty good at first glance, but when you compare it to the others in the same class, it pales in comparison.
Hitching the office suite to the Nokia brand is going to benefit Microsoft much more than it will benefit Nokia.
PC World gives 5 reasons why this is a great deal for Nokia, but other than being “a strong alternative to RIM” these reasons look like the bigger benefit will go to Microsoft.
And the people are speaking out about the merger – and not to say how happy they are about it. Blog comments range from disinterested acceptance to openly hostile rage about the merger:
“Dear Nokia guys, I will not buy under any circumstance a cellphone with windows or any other microsoft software.”
Speculation that Symbian will be replaced by linux-based Maemo has been put to rest by Peter Schneider, Head of Marketing for Maemo Devices at Nokia. “Symbian and Maemo will continue to co-exist.”
Symbian is still a powerful and robust OS, and when used in the right vehicle, will be able to help mobile warriors git ‘r done for years to come.
