It looks like the latest release of iPhone 3.1.2 de-activated the iPhone data tethering with AT&T.
According to MobileCrunch, it also looks like the iPhone hacking community has introduced an iPhone jailbreak which will allow, once again, to jailbreak your iPhone, and then tether your iPhone with your AT&T data plan.
You can check out this post on MobileCrunch for a step by step on how to jailbreak your iPhone, and then how to activate the Blacksnow carrier unlock program.
This of course says nothing about whether you should actually hack your iPhone. My biggest concern is whether this might break the phone, or what damage your might do to the OS in the first place either now or moving forward. It DOES say something about AT&T seemingly deactivating the feature almost unsuspectingly. Nothing is more frustrating then the “bonehead” moves these oligopolistic companies make. Why ? It certainly pisses off their customers, that’s for sure.
It seems that the Canadian carriers, Rogers, has taken a differing view on iPhone tethering allowing the feature for all users who have a 1MB data plan. You can read more about that here. Rogers is getting into defensive mode in preparation for the new cell carriers (Public Mobile, Wind Mobile, and Dave Wireless) coming to Canada, and Bell and Telus getting ready to carry the iPhone starting today.
