HP Avaya Rumour ? Huh ?

by Jeff Wiener on November 17, 2009

Picture 17I periodically check my blog stats, and in particular, look at the types of keywords that people are using to find TheTelecomBlog.com. At times I find the strangest keyword searches. A quick scan of the searches from yesterday revealed the following strange search:

Switch my wife – This is probably from my posting: My wife is moving us from Bell to Rogers. The switch happens Sunday night. Let’s see how it goes.
This person looking to “switch his wife” was obviously disappointed by my blog posting. I’m kind of wondering what the person was actually looking for with the search term “switch my wife” anyway ?

I often see trends with respect to the types of searches people are doing. Patterns clearly emerge with regards to the HOT TOPIC of the day. After checking my key word search for yesterday I found 12 people landed on TheTelecomBlog.com by searching the following phrase: “hp avaya rumour“. As you can see TheTelecomBlog.com comes up on the first page. But, the bigger question is WHY ? Why were people actually typing in the phrase HP Avaya rumour ?

An HP Avaya merger ? Take over ? Buy out perhaps ?

A quick Twitter search uncovered this newspaper article from The Triangle Business Journal - and I quote:
Pacific Crest Securities analyst Brent Bracelin told Reuters that HP might consider buying New Jersey-based Avaya Inc. Avaya would be attractive in the telephony market once the company closes next month on its acquisition of Nortel Networks’ Enterprise Solutions division, which is headquartered in Research Triangle Park.

Interesting thought. That would make quite a power house though.

Avaya is taking over the balance of Nortel’s Enterprise business unit – the deal closes in mid December. HP is taking over 3COM and merging the 3COM product protfolio into the HP fold. So the thought of HP acquiring Avaya would make for a VERY large acquisition – something that would clearly position HP alongside Cisco as the industry leader in switching, core switching, routing, and voice.

Now I realize that this is barely a rumor – it’s one analyst making an observation. An interesting one nonetheless !
