In the “why didn’t I think of that” department, Telecom Tools Inc. has solved a problem that has been plaguing installers for decades – other technicians that don’t know how to use their tools properly!
Telecom Tools filed for a patent today, enabling them to start producing a new punch down tool that will virtually eliminate outages caused by shorting out pairs. Previously, if a technician wasn’t focused on what his tool was touching, he could accidently touch the adjacent connections which could cause the digital stations to lockup, crash, or any number of other failures. This could result in costly downtime for the customer, or expensive replacements for the telcom team. Until Telecom Tools put some thought into a solution
The simple solution is to protect the #66 bit in a polymide coating to prevent the tool from being conductive. At a reasonable cost to replace the current stock of the existing punch down tools, we can expect to see this tool in the techs belts very soon. If this tool prevents one incident, it’s money well spent.
Now, if someone can only create a punch down tool that automatically selected the right bit for you – no more bix bits on #66 rails. A few years back I was chatting with one of my technicians that had “lost” his punch down tool. He shared that he had been using a paper clip to make the connection. He didn’t understand why this caused us to have techs following him all over the city. Wow.
