AT&T - Gearing Up for iPad

AT&T - Gearing Up for iPad

During the much awaited Apple iPad launch, Steve Jobs announced that Apple would partner with AT&T as a long term carrier to offer iPad to customers in the United States.

I’m pretty sure that none of the AT&T iPhone customers would be pleased with this announcement. The Apple – AT&T deal for iPhone hasn’t worked particularly well and customers have often complained about poor service especially in New York and San Francisco. It’s well known that the current state of AT&T 3G Network leaves a lot to be desired especially when it comes to video capabilities.

While AT&T iPhone subscribers have claimed that calls drop frequently, download speeds are slow and network outages are far too frequent to their liking, the carrier insists that it is working round the clock in order to improve its network to support the Apple iPad. It is expected that AT&T will offer free access to up to 20,000 hotspots across the United States.

Many analysts and disgruntled customers believe that Apple has missed a trick by not choosing Verizon as it’s partner for the iPad launch. I believe that since AT&T has an existing contract for Apple iPhone, Apple chose the safe route rather than venturing into a new partnership. On it’s part, AT&T has reported that it’s all set to spend billions of dollars to increase the capacity and expand the coverage of its 3G network this year.

I, for one, am hoping that the AT&T iPad experience would be a different story for customers than the AT&T iPhone ordeal.
