iPhone Apps - No More Location Based Ads

Apple has decided to pull the plug on iPhone applications that use location based ads for targeted advertising. The developer community has been notified of this restriction through the iPhone Developer Connection Blog.

Developers are encouraged to use the iPhone Location Framework only for programs that provide ‘beneficial information’ to the user. There’s no official reasoning why Apple has decided to ban these ads but it is bound to raise eyebrows from the iPhone Developer Community. Is Apple planning to pursue targeted advertising as its next big revenue stream?

Mobile phone ads have become a major revenue generator for advertisers especially restaurants and retailers. Apple had purchased Quattro Wireless (A Leading Mobile Advertisement Platform) in January this year so I’m pretty certain that this move is a part of a well planned strategy to open up a new revenue stream for the company.

Shortly after Apple bought Quattreo Wireless, Google had signaled its intentions by acquiring AdMob. I’d hardly be surprised if these two technology heavyweights take on each other in mobile advertising space as well.

The Apple Developer Connection blog mentions


“If you build your application with features based on a user’s location, make sure these features provide beneficial information. If your app uses location-based information primarily to enable mobile advertisers to deliver targeted ads based on a user’s location, your app will be returned to you by the App Store Review Team for modification before it can be posted to the App Store.”

Mobile Advertising Industry is expected to touch 3.1 Billion Dollars in 2013 and Apple might well be lining itself up for the lion’s share in mobile advertising.
