One of the problems with hosted VoIP solutions is the lack of local PSTN access at the customer’s premises.
Edgewater’s Edgemark provides that level of local gateway functionality with local PSTN failover and some limited call control function. These functions can be maintained by an Edgewater gateway, and Nortel’s CVAS and carrier VoIP solutions are now compliant with the Edgewater device. The lack of PSTN gateway functionality is something that has been lacking in Nortel’s hosted offering, especially in light of Broadsoft’s current Edgewater compliance.
Here’s a short piece from Nortel’s press release …
Strengthening its efforts to help service providers increase revenue potential and subscriber growth by simplifying the delivery of advanced IP services, Nortel* [OTC: NRTLQ] Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions (CVAS) has added Edgewater Networks, Inc., a leading provider of Network Services Gateways, to Nortel CVAS’ industry-leading business and voice multimedia solution.
The combined offer gives service providers a complete, pre-tested end-to-end hosted VoIP solution that they can provide to small and medium businesses (SMBs) as well as large enterprise branch office locations.
“Service providers can leverage the solution to tap into the growing market opportunity of carrier-hosted IP communications, which is expected to reach $8.4 billion worldwide by 2013,” said Diane Myers, Directing Analyst, Infonetics Research. “Carrier-hosted IP is especially attractive for Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) and remote offices because businesses gain the productivity benefits of advanced IP services without the cost of acquiring, deploying and maintaining premises-based equipment.”
“Nortel CVAS continues to secure leading-edge solutions that enable service providers to grow their business by delivering carrier-hosted IP services to enterprise subscribers,” said Samih Elhage, president, CVAS, Nortel. “We also understand that in order for service providers to attract new SMB and enterprise subscribers, they need reliable, integrated and competitive solutions that not only provide advanced communication capabilities but also help meet the enterprises and SMBs cost requirements investment to a minimum.”
