Shaw Launches EXO Service with Network Upgrades, Promises Better Speed

by Gaurav Kheterpal on February 9, 2012

Last weekend, Shaw unveiled its much anticipated EXO service with a Super Bowl commercial based on a fantastic car-chase that features a first-generation Cadillac CTS-V and a pair of iconic Panther-platform Crown Victoria Police Interceptors. The Canadian cable giant formally launched EXO yesterday thereby providing “customers with the best in entertainment and technology offerings and brings a wealth of possibilities for the future.”

Shaw claims EXO offers the “ultimate network” running on “technology like never before” and will offer “the fastest Internet speeds in Canada”. While the campaign sounds typically Shaw-istic, I hope EXO matches up to all the hype surrounding it. After all, a lion’s share in Western Canada is at stake.

Shaw says EXO offers access to improved HD television signals, a greater selection of on-demand titles in full 1080p high-definition, and internet speeds of up to 250 megabits per second. EXO will be a major transformation for Shaw HD Cable subscribers who’ll get access to more than 1,200 HD on-demand movies as well as the top 20 shows on Global Television and other Canadian networks 24 hours after they air. However, Shaw Direct satellite customers will need to wait for a year till a new compatible satellite is launched.

“SHAW EXO is a promise that we will continue to innovate, lead and provide the latest in technology and entertainment offerings to customers,” said Peter Bissonnette, President, Shaw Communications Inc. “With Shaw EXO, the power of our network allows us to continue delivering the products and services that our customers are looking for.”

Shaw EXO WiFi will be offered free to existing Shaw Internet customers in select markets in western Canada. The company’s CEO, Brad Shaw, recently reiterated the company’s customer focus stating that his “style has people at the core.” In recent times, his company has faced testing times due to competitive concerns, the loss of subscribers and steep discounts, however he insists that Shaw is company firmly focused on the future thanks largely to its “extraordinary competitive resolve.

On the other hand, Telus recently juiced up its Optik TV service portfolio by adding motion control and the ability to stream live television to mobile devices. It’s an open secret that Telus has been luring Shaw’s customers with offers of free HD PVRs and Samsung tablets. Though the move has worked well in the past, Shaw’s EXO service launch will make things interesting for sure.
