Apple, Android Users Comprise Majority of Windows Phone Converts

In a mobile market where saturation has reached almost 100 percent, for Microsoft to grow any sort of following for its Windows Phone operating system its going to have to hope new entrants like the Nokia Lumia 900 and the HTC Titian II WP handsets can wrest customers away from the market incumbents.

While such a task might be considered Herculean given the popularity of Apple’s iOS and the market saturation of Android, a recent survey conducted WPCentral has found that the majority of Windows Phone converts are coming from the Big Two, clearly a sign that there are dissatisfied customers in both camps looking for a substantive change.

But before you get your hopes up that the Lumia 900 and the Titan II are instant hits, the relatively small sample size of the study coupled with the fact that the study says little about the actual popularity of either handsets or the Windows Phone OS, means that all you really get out of this is that there are actual people who have purchased Windows Phone devices, and they did so after having owned either an iPhone or an Android device. That said, here are a few interesting things the study found: 

According to the WPCentral studyof 3,500 Windows Phone users, who purchased either the Lumia 900 or the Titan II, 30 percent were found to have jumped ship from Apple, with 27 percent had left Android. The study found further, as a CNET article summarizes, that “BlackBerry accounted for 10 percent, Nokia’s Symbian almost 12 percent, and HP’s WebOS a little more than 6 percent. That left almost 15 percent of Lumia 900 and Titan II adopters upgrading from feature phones.”

Admittedly I look at such studies with a skeptical eye, as their findings are often overblown or misinterpreted in an effort to give credence to a more interesting storyline.

In fact, take the title of this piece for instance. At first glance it seems that there is in fact a deluge of customers leaving their Apple or Android devices and converting to a Windows Phone, but given that only 3,500 people were actually surveyed, all we can really say for certain is there were 3,500 dissatisfied Apple or Android customers and that Nokia and HTC have sold at least 3,500 handsets, hardly earth shattering statistics.

The purpose of the study, however, was to find out specifically the impact the Lumia 900 and the Titan II on the success of the burgeoning Windows Phone platform and to gauge customer brand loyalty. To that end the study did dispel one myth, that Apple has stronger brand loyalty than any other company; showing that the most WP converts actually came from Apple, customers who were perhaps waiting for another choice of reliable operating systems.

On the face of it the WPCentral study also seems to demonstrate an initial interest in both the Lumia 900 and Titan II Windows Phones from all corners of the mobile market, with customers from all major brands becoming acolytes of the Windows Phone OS. While the results of the study are anything but comprehensive, this market interest in these handsets certainly bodes well for Nokia who, unlike HTC and Samsung, has been able to pour all its resources into backing the WP brand, instead of being torn between WP and Android.

But truthfully, anyone with even a passing familiarity with the American mobile scene could have predicted these results. It’s truly no surprise that at least 3,500 Lumia 900 and Titan II handsets have been sold and it’s certainly no surprise that the consumers came from the Apple and Android camps primarily; I mean, where else would they come from?
