Last month, Cisco published a couple of really interesting reports. The first one – IBSG Horizon Study indicated that BYOD is all set to emerge as a norm in the enterprise segment. The other titled Cisco’s 2011-2016 Visual Networking Index forecast suggested that the number of mobile devices and Internet users, will quadruple by 2016.
Therefore, it’s no surprise that Cisco has been heavily investing in new products and companies to capitalize on the smartphone boom. In April, the company unveiled a new line of Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers with app-enabled capabilities for consumers to power and enjoy their connected homes of today and tomorrow. This included the Linksys EA4500, EA3500, and EA2700 models.
And yesterday, the company followed up its earlier announcements with the launch of ‘The ASR 5500‘ – a new core gateway designed to handle millions of mobile devices, each with several apps in constant communication with the network.
To put things in perspective, the ASR 5500 offers 10 times the performance of its predecessor, the ASR 5000, in terms of throughput, Internet connections and app ‘transactions’ on a service provider’s network.
In fact, the ASR 5500 is built on top of the Cisco ASR 5000 Series and its architecture has been optimized to meet the evolving mobile requirements of customers. The company says the ASR 5000 was a gigabit-speed platform while the newly launched ASR 5500 will work on terabit-scale. To put it in simple words, the ASR 5500 acts as a gateway between the mobile network and the Internet and features built-in intelligence to handle different traffic differently. The idea is provide wireless carriers with an elastic core that dynamically adapts to handle different levels of signaling and throughput as required.
The networking giant has already roped in two customers – Verizon Wireless and India’s Bharti for its new offering. The company claims that 20 of the world’s top 25 service providers are using the ASR 5000 and it expects a sizable proportion to move to the ASR 5500. Though Juniper and Cisco already have similar offerings, Cisco would be banking on its Apple-istic marketing might to sell the ASR 5500.
