AT&T Needs a New Advertising Team

AT&TWhile channel surfing tonight, I was forced to watch one of the most pathetic commercials ever.  No, it wasn’t an ambulance-chaser, or a used furniture salesman.  It was the extremely talented Luke Wilson shilling for AT&T.

Who offers the best 3G experience?  According to Luke, it’s AT&T.  But, of the 4/5 categories that AT&T is claiming to excel in, how many actually have anything to do with 3G?

Nations fastest 3G network – ok, yes – clearly 3G related.

Ability to Talk and Surf at the same time – well yes, you can do this with AT&T’s 3G, but can’t you do this with wifi on Verizon too?

Nations most popular smartphones – Other than the iPhone, who else?  And what does this have to do with 3G?

Access to +100K apps – See the above answer

Names that start with “V” – Nice, especially with the magnet falling off the board.

So, in an advertising war you have to focus on what you can do better than your competition, but you’d generally want to compare apples to apples.  Right now the differentiator for AT&T is they have the iPhone, and Verizon doesn’t.  The whole network debate is moot.

AT&T needs to go back to their previous campaign, with the hidden bars.  They were smart, effective, and took the high road.  Mud slinging with Verizon is like wrestling with a pig – you’re gonna get dirty, and the pig likes it.

And Luke – what happened?  You are way better than this schlock.
