iPhone SlingPlayer - Now On AT&T 3G Network

AT&T has finally relented on it’s earlier stand of not permitting the iPhone SlingPlayer application to run on its 3G network. The carrier has just announced that subscribers can now use the SlingPlayer app through a WiFi connection as well as through its 3G network.

While the carrier earlier claimed that the app may be a performance hog for its 3G network, the truth is that AT&T has been receiving a lot of flak from its customers for imposing this restriction. The loss of iPhone exclusivity hasn’t helped AT&T’s cause either.

In a joint press release, AT&T and Sling Media announced the availability of iPhone SlingPlayer app on AT&T 3G network.

Ralph de la Vega, President & CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets said

““Just as we’ve worked with Sling Media in this instance, we look forward to collaborating with other developers so that mobile customers can access a wider, more bandwidth-sensitive, and powerful range of applications in the future”

As expected, SlingMedia has welcomed this move. John Gilmore, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Sling Media said

“We’re delighted with AT&T’s decision to approve the SlingPlayer Mobile app on their 3G network. SlingPlayer Mobile on AT&T’s 3G network gives customers the best experience possible for watching their home TV while on the go.”

AT&T has been under tremendous pressure from FCC to allow VoIP on iPhone and ‘streaming media’ might well have been the next piece of contention after the VoIP issue settled down. As to how well or how poorly will the SlingPlayer app work on the AT&T 3G network, that’s unfair for me to say without trying it out.

With iPad coming to AT&T soon, I’d say that it’s definitely a move in the right direction.
