High Time For Paid Android Apps in Canada

Paid Android Apps Finally?

Paid Android Apps Finally?

It’s hard to believe that there are still no paid Android apps available in Canada despite the fact that Android phones arrived in the country nearly nine months ago. Apple set the example for other carriers to follow for paid apps when it crossed the 1 billion download mark in just nine months

Like other companies, Google also joined the ‘Me Too’ brigade for online app stores by launching Android Market. However, it decided to deprive Canadians of the Android paid apps. If you are using an Android phone in Canada, you can access ONLY the free apps in Android Market. Google has nearly 30,000 paid apps in Android Market so Canadian Android users have been left in the lurch.

To be honest, it sounds a bit ridiculous to me. Had it been the other way round – take the paid apps and leave out the free ones, I could see that as a money making opportunity on part of Google. But ‘take the free’ and ‘leave the paid’ approach leaves me a bit confused. Google Canada spokesperson Wendy Rozeluk says

“There are many factors that come into play to make sure the selling and purchasing processes run smoothly. It takes time to bring support to more countries, which is something we are working hard to do.”

Montreal Gazette reports that Google ‘hopes’ to make an announcement on this issue next week. The lack of paid apps has not only left the Android users frustrated, it has been blasted by the Android developer community as they can not develop and sell Apps for Canadian audience. I hope that Google’s announcement next week will be a green light to paid Android apps in Canada. After all, it’s high time! If Google delays it any further, it is surely bound to have broader implications on Android smartphone sales in Canada.

If you are an Android smartphone user or an Android developer in Canada, keep your fingers crossed!
