Join The Cause

Last Saturday, Chile faced a devastating earthquake which left hundreds dead and many thousands homeless. Nearly all telecom carriers have joined the noble cause of supporting Chile in its worst ever crisis.

Verizon Wireless announced last week that it will waive all long-distance usage charges for calls from its residential landline and Verizon Wireless phones to Chile, from Feb. 26 through Mar. 6. Verizon is also encouraging its customers to donate and contribute to the Chile Earthquake relief efforts by using their mobile phones.

“To make a $10 donation to Habitat for Humanity, text the word “CHILE” to 25383; to make a $10 donation to World Vision, text the word “CHILE” to 20222. Customers will receive a text response to confirm the $10 donation, and 100 percent of customers’ donations will go directly to the relief organization’s efforts to help the victims of the Chilean earthquake. Additional international relief organizations are expected to begin mobile giving campaigns soon.

Verizon Wireless donates the cost of the back-and-forth text messages. Customers will not be charged for the text messages, and the $10 donation will appear on their regular monthly bills.”

T-Mobile also joined the noble cause by encouraging its customers to donate generously for Chile earthquake relief through its User Forum.

In its press release, Sprint announced

“Sprint is waiving text-messaging fees for Sprint, Nextel, Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile USA customers who send mobile donations to short codes associated with organizations participating in the relief and recovery efforts in support of this tragedy. Mobile-phone texts sent to or from the following short codes will not be charged standard text-messaging fees. The codes are:

  • Text “4CHILE” to 50555 to donate $10 on behalf of Convoy of Hope;
  • Text “CHILE” to 50555 to donate $10 on behalf of the Friends of the World Program;
  • Text “CHILE” to 25383 to donate $10 on behalf of Habitat for Humanity;
  • Text “REBUILD” to 50555 to donate $10 on behalf of Operation USA;
  • Text “CHILE” to 52000 to donate $10 on behalf of the Salvation Army; and
  • Text “CHILE” to 20222 to donate $10 on behalf of World Vision.”

Yesterday, AT&T became the latest carrier to join the noble cause by announcing that its customers can use their wireless phones to donate money via text to support relief efforts after Chile’s devastating magnitude-8.8 earthquake. All money donated will be passed on to the selected organization, and AT&T will waive text-messaging fees for the donations, the company said.
