webOS 1.4 Arrives on Bell Canada Handsets

The much anticipated Palm webOS 1.4 finally arrived on Bell Canada Palm Pre handsets on Wednesday. webOS 1.4 is an important milestone for Palm as its the first version of Palm’s proprietary operating system to offer video capabilities.

Palm had a rough year in 2009 and 2010 hasn’t turned out any better so far. Even the company’s CEO Jon Rubinstein acknowledged that the company’s growth has been slower than expected and the road ahead is quiet challenging.  I’m not saying that the video capabilities in webOS 1.4 will turn the dwindling fortunes of Palm and nor is it likely to make the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi as attractive as the Nexus One or the iPhone. However, it does signal good intent on part of Palm to fulfill its ongoing commitments to carriers. And if you are a Palm user, you don’t need to be frustrated any longer due to lack of video capabilities.

Here are the important changes that webOS 1.4 brings to you.

You can record video whenever and wherever inspiration strikes with the new camcorder feature in Camera. After recording a video, you can edit the clip in Videos, upload the video directly to YouTube or Facebook, or send the video by email or multimedia message.

An application developer can feature a video in App Catalog by providing a YouTube URL for the developer’s application. The URL appears as a link on the app details screen. Tapping the link opens the video in the phone’s YouTube application.

You can customize calendar notification sounds in Preferences & Accounts. The options include Mute, System Sound, Ringtone, and Vibrate. The Ringtone option includes new notification sounds to give you more customization choices.

You now have two partial erase options: Erase Apps & Data, which erases all installed applications and associated data, and Erase USB Drive, which erases files stored on the USB drive.
