TELUS starts selling refreshed iPhones

TELUS has recently announced that it is now selling ‘refreshed’ iPhones in addition to brand new iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS phones. The ‘refreshed’ iPhones are unused or lightly used iPhones, in like new condition, that were returned by customers within 14 to 30 days from the date of purchase. Used (or so called Refurbished) cellphones are a big market worldwide and the iPhone is no exception. Amongst other online sellers, eBay sells thousands of refreshed iPhones on a daily basis.

With this move, TELUS is clearly aiming to lure the budget conscious customers who believe that buying an iPhone is a costly affair. Last year, Fido started offering refreshed iPhone 3G for $49. Rogers is offering refreshed iPhone 3G (8 GB) for $49 and refreshed iPhone 3G (16 GB) for $99 for a limited time. TELUS has gone a step further and is offering a refreshed iPhone 3G at just $29 with a 3 year contract. You can buy a refreshed iPhone 3GS 16B at $149 and a refreshed iPhone 3GS 32GB at $249 for a 3 year term.

All TELUS refreshed iPhones have a return policy of 30 days and a 90-day warranty from the date of purchase and these can be purchased only from the TELUS online store.  To compare it with a new iPhone, the 16GB and 32GB cost $199 and $299 respectively on a 3-year agreement. That effectively gives buyers a $50 cost savings. However, the iPhone 3G normally costs $99 on a 3-year agreement, so $29 for the iPhone 3G is a decent savings. In my opinion, savings on refurbished phones are never a bad thing. There are bound to be some concerns about the state of the refreshed phones especially scratches or blemishes, but if you can live with that, go for it. All refreshed iPhones have a 30 day return period and a 90 day warranty. Further, all refreshed iPhones been loaded with the latest software by TELUS to meet current factory standards, with each having gone through an extensive quality check.

I wonder if TELUS and other carriers have already started cleaning up their inventory in anticipation of iPhone 4G. Your thoughts?
