Tether App for Blackberry: Internet Anywhere, Anytime

Internet Anywhere, Anytime

Internet Anywhere, Anytime

I’ve been a big fan of Tether (erstwhile TetherBerry) app ever since I downloaded it on my Blackberry about a year ago. Tether lets you enjoy the freedom of the internet by connecting your Blackberry to your laptop or desktop computer to share the smartphone’s data connection. I’ve come across many frequent business travelers who’re fed up of paying exorbitant charges for internet services while they are on the move. IMO, Tether is a perfect cost-effective solution for such people who are frequently hopping between airports, hotel rooms and offices.

The best part about Tether is the ease of setup. Just download the software on your Blackberry phone and your laptop or desktop and start surfing the internet. The installation is quick and easy unlike other tethering applications which are tedious to install and require a great deal of technical know-how. With Tether, you connect to the Internet without paying certain wireless carrier’s tethering fees in most countries.

Though Tether started off in 2009, it has made a lot of progress in relatively quick time. A Mac version was launched shortly after the Windows version. The USB version was followed up with a Bluetooth version that does away with the hassles of connecting a USB cable. Last month, Tether announced that the app has been downloaded on more than 110,000 Blackberry phones all over the world. Tether is not limited to Blackberry alone and a Beta version is available for Android users as well.

Many people would argue that the Blackberry Desktop Manager already includes an ‘IP Modem’ section which can tether your phone for free, so why opt for a paid tethering app such as Tether? Based on my experience, I’d say that Tether beats the Desktop Manager tethering capabilities hands down in terms of speed and carrier agnosticism. Further, the Blackberry Desktop Manager does not offer tethering through Bluetooth as yet, another feather in the cap for Tether.

The Tether app is available on Blackberry App World for $49.99. Tether website offers a 7 day free trial as well. It works on most carriers worldwide except the iDen Network.
