Apple To Sell Unlocked iPhone 4 in Canada

by Gaurav Kheterpal on June 18, 2010

There’s some good news for staunch Apple loyalists and iPhone lovers in Canada- Apple will be selling the unlocked version of iPhone 4 in the country. It means that customers will be able to buy a new contract-free iPhone directly from Apple and migrate to the wireless provider of their choice as and when they want. The iPhone 4 is due to be released by end of July in Canada.

Apple is treading a dangerous terrain by selling unlocked phones directly to customers in Canada through its website. Google took the same risk with Nexus One earlier this year and the move backfired. Will Apple manage to fare any better than Google?

Customers have the option of buying either an iPhone 3GS or the new iPhone 4 through Apple Canada’s website. The 3GS version costs $549 and ships by June 24th. The Canadian pricing for upcoming (unlocked) iPhone 4 is yet to be announced by Apple. If you are happy with a locked version at a lower price and a multi-year contract, you can buy the new iPhone from Bell, Rogers or Telus. These carriers lock their iPhones so that they won’t work on competitors’ networks.

IMO, the latest move from Apple is bound to put pressure on the Big Three to explore the option of offering unlocked iPhones. With an unlocked iPhone, customers can switch carriers by purchasing a new SIM or micro-SIM for a nominal cost of $10. Another huge advantage of unlocked iPhones is that they work internationally on most GSM networks. In addition to Canada, Apple will also sell unlocked iPhones in UK and France. In UK, the iPhone 3GS 8GB costs £419 and the iPhone 4 models will be priced at £499 and £599 for the 16GB and 32GB versions respectively. Apple has released an FAQ that answers some of the questions that customers may have about these new plans.

The latest announcement from Apple is bound to make iPhone users in U.S. even more jealous of Canadians. No iPhone exclusivity, better networks than yours truly AT&T and now unlocked iPhones – the grass definitely seems to be greener on the other side of the border. From a customer perspective, I think it’s a welcome move as it restricts monopolistic practices and carriers can no longer bully customers as per their wishes.

Unlocked phones offer more flexibility to customers, however the higher flexibility and peace of mind comes at a substantial cost. Are you currently an iPhone customer for Rogers, Telus or Bell? If so, would you be buying the new unlocked iPhone directly from Apple? I’d be glad to hear from you.

I’m a current iPhone customer with Rogers and I have been using an unlocked phone for years (although having to pay aroung $25 per year to get the latest software installed).

I will gladly run to the Apple store to get an unlocked iPhone 4 when it comes out in a few weeks… I hate being stuck in a 3-year contract (phone never last this long anyway!) and love being able to buy a sim card whenever I travel outside Canada… therefore greatly cuting on internatianal rates and roaming (especially data) charges.

If you think about it and do the math, if you buy a locked phone from Rogers or Bell, they will cut the price by about $300 if you get into a 3-year contract… so $100 per year… or $8 per month! If you travel a little or a lot like me, getting an unlocked phone directly from Apple is really worth the price.

I am really considering purchasing the iPhone 4 directly from Apple. I am currently with Fido. My only concern is that Fido, Rogers or Bell will still want to sell me a crazy expensive plan that would normally be applicable to those who are locked in a contract.
