Apple Already Moving on iPad 2?

by Jordan Richardson on December 8, 2010

A report from DigiTimes on Tuesday revealed that Apple already has plans to begin moving units of the iPad 2.

According to the report, Foxconn Electronics will begin shipping the new version of Apple’s iPad as early as the end of February 2011. Whether or not more suicide nets for the workers are on the way remains to be seen.

Apple had planned to start mass producing the second iPad units in January, says the report, but those plans changed because the company’s firmware was still in the testing stage.

Now let’s be clear: this story should most assuredly be treated with a gigantic grain of salt. That said, there are reasons to believe that there’s merit to the tale.

Apple has a history of pushing out products with relative quickness. It has become common practice for the Cupertino company to shove out one version of a product while already building and nearly finalizing its predecessor. This sort of planned obsolescence is built in to the Apple business model to ensure that customers keep on coming back for something “new.” It’s a lot like Malibu Stacy’s “new hat.”

If we travel back in time a little to the release of the first iPad, we see a similar pattern. An announcement for the tablet was made in January of 2010 and the device was eventually released in April. Apple has learned that hype sells, but they’ve also learned that hype fades. Time is of the essence, so a quick release of the iPad 2 isn’t something that strays from Apple’s PR model at all.

With many expected to get the iPad this Christmas and many others expected to line up for the object in the fray after the holidays, the release of the iPad 2 couldn’t come at a better time for Apple. They may have wanted to keep this news quiet, though, and I would expect a possible comment about this information in relatively short order. As of press time, though, Apple hasn’t had anything to say.

With this in mind, you may want to wait on springing for an iPad for the holidays. The iPad 2 may be just around the corner. If it is, we all know what that means: the iPad 3 won’t be far behind.

Personally, I’m waiting for the Ipad 8. “Why?” you might ask. Cause the number 8 rocks.

I have it from several unreliable sources that the iPad 8 will be available in the summer of 2012. 🙂
