Apple Planning iPad 2 Event for March

by Jordan Richardson on February 24, 2011

The unveiling of Apple’s iPad 2 is just around the corner, it seems.

The company mailed out invitations to media outlets on Wednesday, pointing to an event in San Francisco to be held on March 2. At the bottom of the invitation is written “Come see what 2011 will be the year of.” The page on the calendar is also peeled back a bit to reveal what looks like a tablet underneath.

It was back in December that we first stumbled on word that the Cupertino company might be working on the iPad 2. The report said that Foxconn Electronics was looking to move units by the end of February 2011, so it looks like things are working according to plan.

The iPad has proven to be an incredibly popular unit for Apple. It moved more than 15 million units in the first nine months it was on sale and pushed out 7.3 million alone during the holiday shopping season, topping analyst predictions by at least one million iPads.

The launch of the iPad set off the tablet wars and put many manufacturers in the business of creating competitive units virtually overnight. Samsung started moving on the Galaxy Tab, while Motorola will be rolling out a tablet this week in the form of the Xoom.

But to Apple’s credit, the iPad was the unit that got the ball rolling among mainstream consumers. A decade ago, tablet computers were running on Windows and sold among business users. Other consumers didn’t bite until the iPad made tablet computing hip and accessible, successfully achieving a blend of style and function that made use of the touch software elegantly.

As usual, Apple has kept mum about the details. The famously secretive company has the goods on the iPad 2 under lock and key and it doesn’t appear as though it’s going to meet the same fate as the iPhone 4.

A lot is riding on the iPad 2, but Apple is predicted to prevail once again. The fanbase for the company’s products is immense and should be considered and impressive weapon in the tablet wars. With March 2 kicking off what should be a ferocious year in the world of technology, industry watchers the world over are marking their calendars.
