The Battle For Supremacy: Amazon Appstore vs. Android Market!

The much hyped Amazon Appstore for Android finally went live yesterday, despite a pending trademark lawsuit by Apple over the “App Store” name. The plan is simple – please customers with a kind of iTunes for Android apps, stock it with bestsellers like Angry Birds Rio and capitalize on the current weaknesses (of which there are plenty) of Android Market.

While the plan looks perfect on paper, challenging the likes of Google and Apple is easier said than done. Amazon couldn’t have started its app store adventure on a worse note than choosing to defy a lawsuit from Apple which claims it infringes the trademark of its own three-year-old App Store. Though Google started with the noble idea of the more, the merrier as far as Android app stores are concerned, it’s increasingly concerned over the growing competition.

As if one enemy wasn’t enough, Amazon has decided to take on two of the biggest technology giants at the same time. Whether Amazon would be able to settle the “App Store” issue amicably with Apple? Does Amazon app store pose a threat to Android Market? Are competitive app stores good, bad or neutral for the overall growth of Android? Only time will tell.

First things first, can Amazon Appstore compete with Android Market? While some believe Amazon app store is well-executed and poised for success, others believe the retail giant urgently needs to build an Android device to take matters into its own hands. I’ve to admit that Amazon has done its homework well. The retail giant is a champion in providing a pleasing online navigation experience and it shows on the Amazon appstore. I’m glad Amazon resisted the urge to develop an Android Market clone and instead stuck to its tried-and-tested design principles. There’s plenty of innovation too – the Amazon Appstore has a “test drive” feature that lets users try apps from their computer’s Web browser, but then it’s hardly an indication of how it would work on their phone.

The Amazon appstore launched with 3,800 Android apps on board, each of which “has been tested and approved by Amazon employees as virus-free”. Surely, Amazon didn’t intend to poke fun at Android Market’s recent malware invasions. Customers can purchase apps with their existing accounts that they use to buy books on Kindles and other items on I’d expect Amazon to leave no stone unturned in luring Android Market customers to jump ship and join its app store and the retail giant set the ball rolling yesterday by offering free downloads of the latest version of the popular smartphone game Angry Birds. The retail giant has further vowed to give away a free app every day.

Amazon says it has worked hard to improve app discoverability. From a developer’s perspective, it’s refreshing to see a new pricing model where the retail giant pays developers 70% of the sale price of the app or 20% of the list price, whichever is greater. Though Amazon decided to stick to the $99 annual fee model for access to its Appstore, the company is waiving this fee for the first year to attract the Android Market developer community.

Coming back to the original question – can Amazon appstore compete with Android Market? Though it’s difficult to categorically declare one store better than the other, Amazon has done a fabulous job of kicking Google where it hurts most.

The Amazon appstore was said to have only 3800 apps in store. This seems to be a small number, considering that you can find, using any files search engine like, , a few thousand free Android apps for downloading in the net.
