The Wind Of Change: Ken Campbell Departs, Lacavera Takes WIND Mobile Reins

by Gaurav Kheterpal on June 24, 2011

The last few weeks have been quite eventful for WIND Mobile. The carrier has gone from strength to strength as it added 39,000 new mobile phone subscribers in its latest quarter, won a crucial appeal of the Federal Court and then launched ‘Unlimited Business Solutions‘, thereby offering businesses the chance to create their own flexible solution that comes without a contract.

Though WIND appears well settled and it claims to be the “fastest growing wireless carrier in Canada”, the news of a sudden management shakeup has caught everyone by surprise. The chief executive of Wind Mobile, Ken Campbell, is exiting the company and will be replaced by founder and chairman Anthony Lacavera. Gianluca Corti will take over as WIND Mobile COO.

Ken Campbell joined WIND in its infancy start-up days and played an instrumental role in growing the carrier’s footprint to over 300,000 subscribers. Though he is no longer listed on the ‘Our Team‘ page on the carrier’s website, his LinkedIn profile still mentions ‘CEO at WIND Mobile’ as his current assignment. The carrier did not disclose the reason for Campbell’s departure. Prior to WIND, Campbell held several key management positions at Vodafone, Orascom and Mobinil.

“Ken has been an integral part of the Wind Mobile team since day one — overseeing the launch of the brand, building our customer base and network and navigating the company through a tumultuous regulatory environment,” said Lacavera, who heads Wind’s parent company, Globalive.

Though Campbell was the designated top executive at WIND, Globalive’s high profile chairman Anthony Lacavera has long been the public face of both Globalive and Wind. Campbell’s resignation is being linked to speculation whether VimpelCom would continue to fund Wind in Canada after its huge merger.

In retrospect, senior management sackings are no longer a surprise in Canada’s high-stake wireless industry. Last month, Mobilicity let go VP sales Doug Perry, VP marketing Sara Moore and VP network operations Sharyn Gravelle.
