Polar Mobile Partners With The Hockey News

by Gaurav Kheterpal on September 12, 2011

Polar Mobile has been on a roll off-late. Last month, the company entered into an agreement with Nokia to launch over 300 mobile apps on Symbian and WP7 for Nokia smartphones. As I mentioned in my last post, Polar is by far the most well-known mobile app development company in Canada. The Toronto-based company has grown from strength to strength this year as it bagged large app development projects on MeeGoPlayBook and BlackBerry platforms.

And in good news for all Hockey fans – Polar Mobile yesterday set the clock ticking for the start of the hockey season in October. The company announced that it has teamed up with The Hockey News to launch apps for every NHL team.

For what it’s worth, the Hockey News mobile app have already have served 160,000,000 page views to over 1,000,000 people in 65 countries since September 2008. The new apps would be built initially for the iPhone, Android and BlackBerry phones and PlayBook apps are expected to be available at a later stage. Polar says the cross-platform smartphone apps would be available in time for the start of the 2011-2012 NHL season.

Continuing its impressive growth, the company recently announced that it will open up development and marketing offices in the Middle East. The company has signed a partnership with EMS, the smartphone partner for major handset manufacturers and operators in the Middle East region, to launch mobile Apps across multiple handsets for over 100 media companies in the Middle East region.

In December last year, Polar teamed up with e National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) to form a multi-year partnership to develop a series of multi-faceted mobile apps. The NHLPA apps allow fans to access unique player based content from the palm of their hands.

The Hockey News App is currently free in the BlackBerry App World so it would be interesting to see if the duo decides to change strategy and shift to a paid model for the proposed apps. Subscribers can currently get THN updates by texting to 22233, through the THN app or by visiting http://thn.mobi on their smartphones. The NHL team apps are expected to be built on Polar Mobile’s SMART platform that powers over 1,200 mobile Apps across smartphones and tablets for over 300 publishers in 10 countries.

Are you ready for this year’s hockey season? Whom do you think will triumph this year?
