Apple Release Today: What iPhone will we see?

by Matt Klassen on October 4, 2011

After months of speculation about the next iteration of the iPhone, with Apple foregoing its metronome-like consistent release schedule, it seems like Apple loving consumers are about to blow their collective gaskets if they don’t get their hands on some cool new Apple product soon.

Now truth be told, I didn’t want to write about Apple’s “Lets Talk iPhone” event slated for today, but in the unfortunately Apple-centric world we live in, there’s really nothing else. So with Apple fans looking forward to finally exhaling in a few hours, will they be impressed by what Apple has to offer, or will the new iPhone simply not be able to live up to the hype?

To that end, the question on everyone’s mind is what kind of iPhone will we see? Will it be the much anticipated new iPhone 5, packed with new features and cool upgrades, or will it simply be the iPhone 4S, yet another incremental upgrade that Apple will repackage and re-market as the coolest new must-have device that you already have? While users are hoping not to hear that sort of bad news, the good news is we won’t have to wait long to actually hear it.

So what can we expect from today’s Apple event? Destined to proven wrong, of course, I would guess that the bottom line would be a significant hardware upgrade, similar to what we saw between the iPhone 3G and the 3GS. Further, I would wager that Apple will once again upgrade the device’s camera and its internal storage as well, but beyond that the changes really depend on what sort of device we’re going to see.

If after all this time Apple simply releases an incrementally upgraded iPhone 4S, don’t expect much change. The form factor will, as per usual, stay exactly the same, meaning that visually you’ll still be looking at the good old iPhone 4, the only differences being the aforementioned internal upgrades. Should Apple follow this course, it will certainly be interesting to see if the 4S comes equipped with NFC technology, as incorporating the latter might require some redesign.

If, however, Apple does what I would consider the unexpected and actually releases the iPhone 5 today, truly the sky’s the limit as to what we’ll see. Integrating much of the speculation we’ve heard over the past few months, the iPhone 5 may very well look substantially different from its predecessor, featuring a sophisticated sleek, and perhaps tapered, design.

Beyond that, I would reasonably expect it to be NPC enabled, contain the new universal World Mode (usable on any kind of network) we heard about this past Spring, and possibly have significantly enhanced internal storage.

So which device will it be? While that question will be answered shortly, one thing is for sure, we won’t be getting our hands on it for several weeks, as I would anticipate Apple’s official release date coming somewhere later this month or perhaps early November, just in time for the start of the Christmas purchasing season.
