Telus Expands 4G Footprint In Manitoba

by Gaurav Kheterpal on December 15, 2011

2011 has been the ‘The Year of 4G” of sorts for Canada. Rogers and Bell got their LTE acts together while Telus continues to expand its HSPA+ network.

In September, Telus upgraded its wireless network to HSPA+ dual cell in Atlantic Canada. And yesterday, Telus announced that it has turned on more new HSPA+ dual-cell wireless sites in Manitoba, offering even more Manitobans a chance to experience Canada’s fastest coast-to-coast 4G wireless network with manufacturer’s rated peak download speed of up to 42 megabits per second.

Telus says it has installed new cell towers in Selkirk, Victoria Beach and Steinbach.

The carrier says it has invested $875,000 in a new wireless site west of Revelstoke to bring new 4G wireless service to an important stretch of Highway 1 between Kamloops and the Alberta border. Telus says it plans to provide end to end coverage in Portage la Prairie early next year. Brandon will be on the HSPA+ coverage maps next summer. Telus claims it now covers 66 per cent of Manitoba.

Our commitment to our customers is to offer the best wireless experience coast-to-coast. We are investing millions of dollars to bring them the most advanced network technologies in urban and rural areas,” said Brent Johnston, vice-president of Mobility Solutions at TELUS. “We are thrilled to offer more Manitobans access to our blazing fast network.”

TELUS has invested heavily in Manitoba over the years. Earlier this year, it pumped in $22 million to expand and enhance its 4G wireless services for consumers, businesses and healthcare providers.

Telus claims that its HSPA+ dual cell network offers download speeds of up to 42 megabits per second with an expected average of 7-14 megabits per second. However, actual speeds may vary based on various conditions such as device used, congestion etc. As for devices, Telus is currently offering Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate 4G – Canada’s fastest 4G phone. The company says users will be able to “get all the benefits on your current phone with the Telus 4G network”. That sounds interesting! If you are a Telus subscriber in any of the mentioned areas, have you experienced the speed boost? Have your say by leaving a comment.
