Santa Loves iPhone And Android!

by Gaurav Kheterpal on December 28, 2011

Christmas is the time for shopping, gifts, family get-togethers and celebrations. Last holiday season, the Apple iPad was the most desired tech item and the story was expected to be no different this year with smartphones and tablets topping the shopping charts.

According to Flurry Analytics, some 6.8 million combined iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas Day. The prior record activation day was Christmas Day 2010 with 2.8 million device activations so this represents an over-year 140 percent jump.

2011 has been the year of iPhone and Android so in a sense, it’s no surprise that it was an iOS and Android kind of Christmas as well.

To put things in perspective, between December 1st and December 20th, activations averaged 1.5 million per day. On Christmas Day, the number of activations shot up a whopping 353 percent. Google’s Andy Rubin confirmed that Android saw 3.7 million activations in two days (Christmas day and the day before). Last week, Google claimed to be activating 700,000 Android devices each day so it more than doubled the number on Christmas day.

“For those wondering, we count each device only once (ie, we don’t count re-sold devices), and ‘activations’ means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service,” Google’s Andy Rubin said in a Google+ post.

As expected, app downloads spiked on Christmas day as well.  Flurry says download volumes increased by 125% and nearly a quarter of a billion downloads occurred on Christmas Day 2011, up from the 108 million a day average it gathered between December 1 to 20. As expected, Christmas Day app downloads spiked early morning, and finally hit a peak around dinner time when gifts are unwrapped and people begin to play with their new toys in earnest.  It’s believed that people all over the world downloaded more than 15 million apps were downloaded between 7 and 9 pm.

Flurry expects 2012 to be a golden year for Apple App Store and Android Market – with both expected to hit the 10 billion app downloads mark.

Another report from Localytics indicates that iOS (12.5x) and Android (12x) reported exponentially higher activation figures between December 23 – 26 when compared to previous weeks. The research firm says it further registered 21x more iPods accessing apps over the Christmas weekend. Geographically, most iPhones were sold in the U.S, Germany and the UK, whereas South Korea, Sweden and Spain topped the Android device activations chart.

Hope you had a Merry Christmas and wishing you a Happy New Year!
