Mobilicity Lures Customers With Free Data On Unlimited Talk & Text Plans

The holiday season may be over, but the joyride continues for Mobilicity customers and prospects. After offering half-price rate plans for the holiday season, the discount carrier is now offering free unlimited data on its unlimited talk and text plans.

Mobilicity says its free data announcement will be welcome news for “Canadians who have shied away from using data on their mobile phones out of fear of receiving outrageously expensive data charges”

As part of the latest promotion, Mobilicity customers can add free unlimited data to their $45 talk and text plan. Those on a $35 talk and text plan get unlimited access to email, social networks and instant messaging.  If your budget is on the lower side, you can choose to add free unlimited social networking to a $25 talk and text plan.

Additionally, Mobilicity is offering a $50 port-in credit promotion for customers who port their existing phone number to Mobilicity AND register for pre-authorized credit card payment (PAC) will receive $10 credits over five months.

IMO, Mobilicity’s business model has been successful primarily due to two reasons – aggressive pricing and effective retail distribution. Last July, the carrier slashed its U. S. data roaming rates by 70 percent causing a ripple effect as Telus lowered its roaming charges and Rogers offered what it considers to be “options to help customers manage their roaming fees.”

Over the last 12 months, Mobilicity built an impressive list of retail partners. In 2010, it signed up a deal with 7-Eleven convenient stores to sell its phones at select locations in Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton. Last August, Mobilicity stepped up the ante by announcing a distribution agreement with Walmart Canada which would see the firm`s wireless phones and airtime bundles sold in approximately 50 Walmart stores across Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.

On a separate note, Mobilicity last week announced that the Galaxy Nexus is “coming soon”, although it’s not clear just how soon this will happen.
