Survey reveals that 16% of Canadians have switched off their cable service

Over the last couple of years, the cable industry have suffered considerably as online streaming services have become a much more popular option for customers to choose instead.

The industry’s struggles look set to continue though as a new survey has revealed that now 16% of all Canadians no longer have a cable connection and rely on the web for all their TV services.

In the survey compiled by ComScore, many participants found that almost half of the participants had both a TV and Internet service to watch shows.

The results reflect on the growing changes within the television industry where the more traditional set-ups such as analogue TV and cable are being overcome by digital technologies.

One thing that Comscore’s study found is that younger audiences were particularly reliant on the Internet to get their shows with ¼ of under 25’s only using the web to watch TV.

Alongside that, around 20% of 24-35 year old participants stated that they had ditched their cable service in return for switching to a streaming service to watch their favourite content.

Unsurprisingly, it was the older generations who were keen to hang onto their fixed TV service with nearly half of the over 45’sin the survey saying that they only watched shows on television rather than the Internet.

Even though the results might fit the expected stereotypes of each group, the growth of the internet has skyrocketed tremendously over the past 3 years.

After all, there has been a staggering 270% rise in the amount of 25-34 year olds relying on the Internet for their favourite shows while there has also been a 60% rise in the under 25’s since 2010.

With this in mind, it has meant that many cable companies are now launching dedicated streaming services based on practices such as IPTV to try and capitalise on the emerging shift between traditional and modern forms of television.

As the reliance on the internet is expected to continue over the next few years, don’t be surprised if the cable industry continues to struggle against its digital rivals as technology advances year by year.
