Wind Mobile Leaks Nexus 5 Specs

by Matt Klassen on October 30, 2013

Rivalling some of Apple’s most embarrassing iPhone leaks, the forthcoming—although yet to be confirmed—Google Nexus 5 is quickly becoming one of the worst kept secrets in mobile history. In fact, while neither Google nor LG have yet to even acknowledge the existence of the new super phone, carriers are seemingly doing their best to leak anything and everything they have about the device.

So it was certainly an interesting turn of events when a “pre-registration” page went live via the Facebook page of Canadian-based carrier Wind Mobile on Monday, a blunder that unveiled pictures of the new phone, as well as the marketing tag line and detailed specs. Of course the page was quickly removed, but not before the savvy fellow Canadian tech blog MobileSyrup was able to snap some pics.

Again, while nothing has been confirmed one has to think that leaks such as this point to the imminent arrival of Google’s latest smartphone, leading many to speculate that previous rumours about an October 31st launch date might be right on the money.

“Google Nexus 5. The smart, new phone made to capture the moments that matter,” the new super phone’s tag line read on Wind Mobile’s Facebook page yesterday. Of course I’m sure Google would have liked to unveil the catchy phrase during its release event, but we’ll all just have to act surprised when it does I guess.

In addition to the pre-registration page with the aforementioned tagline, Wind Mobile also published the entire spec sheet for the new phone. According to the page, the new phone will feature a 4.95-inch, 1080P display, an 8MP rear-facing camera and will run Android 4.4 (dubbed KitKat). The 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 will be bundled into the device.

But one has to think that given the frequency and quality of these leaks—heck, is there anything we don’t know about this phone?—that perhaps these blunders are not really blunders at all, but carefully orchestrated marketing moves designed to help build a phone’s hype through non-traditional channels.

One needs only to look at the various times Apple’s prototype iPhone’s were left lying around to see that instead of diminishing the market’s interest in the forthcoming device, such monumental leaks seem to only spur on the rabid interest all the more, with analysts and consumers alike interested to see if the leaks were accurate.

Now assuming the information Wind Mobile has leaked is accurate, the spec sheet of the Nexus 5 does match the myriad of rumours we’ve already heard. Although reports had indicated we’d see the phone already, as mentioned neither Google nor LG has uttered a word officially about its existence…so don’t be surprised if one ‘accidentally’ turns up on some bar room floor this week.
