BlackBerry Uses iMessage Spam Reports to Push for BBM

Apple introduced iMessage with iOS 5 back in 2011 as a great and easy way to send a text or multimedia message phone-to-phone without paying fees to your wireless carrier. Since then, security and anti-spam companies such as Cloudmark have kept an eye on the service, just to note that it is spam-free. Well, almost, as the Tom Landesman of Cloudmark has noticed that thanks to one particularly aggressive campaign from a junk mailer, iMessage accounts for more than 30% of all mobile spam messages.

There is one important fact that we need to emphasize when it comes to mobile spam messages: these campaign come and go, so there is no continuous presence. What Cloudmark has spotted during the past couple of months is that scammers have been selling imitation designer handbags. More lately, the spammers have been pushing deals on knock-off Ray-Ban and Oakley sunglasses.

Given the rivalry between Apple and BlackBerry, you can imagine the latter’s reaction when the Cloudmark report went live. BlackBerry’s Jeff Gadway, head of product and brand marketing for BBM, has quickly penned a blog post comparing BBM to iMessage with a highlight: contrary to Apple’s messaging service, BBM is not vulnerable to spam. Of course, this is a reason for switching to BBM, he says, and lists five reasons why.

1) BBM is architected in a way that protects our 85 million users against spammers.
2) BBM gives you control.
3) BBM Protected ups the security ante.
4) BBM empowers you to protect yourself from unsolicited messages.
5) BBM’s anti-spam features work on any platform.

Actually, what Jeff Gadway “forgot” to mention in his article is that BBM is also vulnerable to spam. A quick Google search for “BBM spam” keywords reveals a long list of forum entries, with BBM users complaining about the huge amount of spam messages they receive.
