PBX Market Down 7%, UC Applications Up 21% Year-Over-Year: Report

Market research firm Infonetics Research has released its latest Enterprise Unified Communications and Voice Equipment report analyzing vendor market share for the third quarter of 2014 and also projecting the trend through 2018 for TDM PBXs, hybrid and pure IP PBXs, IP PBXs by system size, VoIP gateways, unified communications, and IP desk phones and softphones.

The market research firm tracks companies such as Alcatel-Lucent, AudioCodes, Avaya, Cisco, Ericsson-LG Enterprise, Microsoft, Mitel, NEC, Polycom, Samsung, ShoreTel, Toshiba, Unify, Yealink, as well as others.

Looking back to the past quarter, Infonetics found that the worldwide PBX market, including TDM, hybrid and pure IP, dropped 7% year-over-year, but is up 5% sequentially. Also, PBX licence shipments dropped 2% in Q3 2014 compared to the same period a year ago.

As for the Asia Pacific region, Infonetics has found that it typically posted growth during the period between July and September, and it didn’t disappoint, recording double-digit revenue compared to a year ago.

Another highlight of the Infonetics report is the companies leading the market. On top of the list are companies such as Cisco, Avaya, NEC, and Mitel, which lead the combined PBX and unified communications market in the third quarter by global revenue.

As for unified communication applications, the analysts at Infonetics found that it has continued its steady upward trajectory, rising 21% since last year.

“The enterprise telephony market continues to struggle as businesses hold off new PBX purchases. Companies are evaluating cloud alternatives and investing in unified communications (UC) applications instead of PBXs, and purchase cycles are getting longer,” notes Diane Myers, principal analyst for VoIP, UC, and IMS at Infonetics Research. “There is competitive pressure as well, but not as much as in the past. North America again had the toughest quarter of all the regions, with a double digit decline from the year-ago third quarter.”

The most recent numbers show a downward trend for the PBX market, however. It was down 6% in Q2, 2014, year-over-year, while unified communications were up 31% from a year ago.
