Facebook to Use Nokia’s Here Maps Service Under New Deal

Nokia’s is marketing of its Here Maps division hasn’t stopped the company inking a deal with one of the potential buyers: Facebook is using Here for its mobile Web version and also running a test for the Nokia-developed maps to power location in native apps such as Messenger and Instagram, reports TechCrunch.

The estimated market value of Nokia’s Here maps division is roughly $2 billion, but some think it could go as high as double because of the company’s current data set. Facebook is just one of several companies courting the Here division; among the others are Samsung, Uber, Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, and Yahoo.

The Nokia–Facebook partnership hasn’t been announced officially: The companies contacted TechCrunch for comment and confirmed the basic details: “We are testing Nokia HERE maps across Facebook to give us more control and flexibility in delivering a consistent maps experience,” a Facebook spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch by email. “I can confirm that we’re testing HERE maps in Android versions of some of our standalone apps like Instagram and Messenger as well.” “We’re excited that our maps can be enjoyed by Facebook users,” a Here spokesperson said.

Here maps appear in the apps, but beyond that Facebook also uses Here geocoding, which provides a significant amount of specific data to both Facebook and users when tagging locations in Instagram and Messenger, or in the main Facebook app.

Don’t expect to see signs of Here maps yet in the Facebook app (on iOS this appears to be using Apple’s own Maps service or Google Maps). However, if you visit Facebook’s mobile site through your built-in browser and check out a map of a user’s or venue’s location, there will be a visible “Here” logo.

Now, the question is: Does this mean Facebook is ready to shell out billions to buy the Here Maps division?
