AT&T Using NetComm and Ericsson Equipment for Fixed Wireless Local Loop Technology Tests

AT&T recently confirmed that it is testing fixed wireless local loop (WLL) technology in selected areas in the US (Alabama, Georgia, Kansas, and Virginia) with local residents who have signed up for the testing period and is seeing speeds of around 15 to 25 Mbps.

A recent Sydney Morning Herald article followed up on this report and claims AT&T is using equipment from Australia’s NetComm Wireless and services from Ericsson for WLL technology tests.

The Australian newspaper cites unnamed sources alleging that NetComm signed a master purchase agreement with AT&T in a deal calling for the equipment supplier to work with Ericsson to deploy AT&T’s fixed WLL service in rural and regional parts of the US.

NetComm has confirmed that it has signed an agreement with a “a large USA-based telecommunications carrier” for a “fixed-wireless rural broadband network which will be built by that carrier,” but was careful not to mention any names.

“This agreement is a key milestone in NetComm Wireless’ global growth strategy for regional broadband,” NetComm CEO David Stewart said in the company’s release announcing the purchase agreement. “It builds on our success to date with Ericsson in delivering a similar service to Australia’s National Broadband Network. We see potential for this technology solution in many different countries.”

AT&T, on the other hand, didn’t comment when asked about the partnership with NetComm.

The technology AT&T is testing looks similar to the nationwide 2.3 GHz fixed wireless LTE “wholesale-only” network the Australian government announced back in 2011. The equipment was built by Ericsson, which had inked a deal with NetComm for up to half a million fixed wireless LTE devices to power the network.
